What are Rechargeable Flashlights?

Rechargeable flashlights are light sources that include a battery that can be recharged. This kind of flashlight is useful because, with the increased light output of flashlights in our time, regular batteries get used up very quickly. Dedicated rechargeable batteries allow the flashlight to shine a brighter light for a longer distance and a longer runtime.

Uses for Rechargeable Flashlights

Anyone can use a rechargeable flashlight where they would use a regular flashlight, but there are some instances where a rechargeable flashlight is the much better option. In the case of security and law enforcement, not having a ready-to-go flashlight can be a big mistake which could end in the officer’s or another’s life being taken. Less lethally, having a rechargeable flashlight in your emergency preparedness kit is better than a non-rechargeable one because you can trust that you can recharge it off a laptop or generator (if it has a USB charger). This also saves space in your kit, as you will not need extra batteries floating around in the bottom of it. Rechargeable batteries are also handy to keep on the charging cradle next to the back door. This is because it will be fully charged and within easy reach if you hear something in the yard and need to check it out.

What are Lumens and What Output is Appropriate?

Lumens are the measure of how much light is actually coming out of a flashlight. The larger the lumens number is, the brighter the flashlight beam will appear. Flashlights’ lumens can range from one or even part of one lumen to multiple thousands, but the more important matter is to determine what the most appropriate lumen output is for the job you plan to perform.

There are two things you should really consider when determining the best light output for the job. The first is that the higher the lumens, the faster your battery will run down. It really does not make any difference how nice or bright your light source is if it’s dead. Thus, keep in mind how long you need the flashlight to run. The other thing to consider is that most rechargeable flashlights these days have multiple modes at which they output different levels of lumens. Do not feel you have to use the turbo mode just because it is the brightest. The likelihood is you will spend most of your time in a lower mode in hopes of saving some battery.

Now take a look at a chart that will help you determine the best mode for the different activities you plan to perform.

Lumens Activities
1-25 Reading a Book, Searching a Dim Room
25-100 Around the House, General Outdoors
100-1000 Emergency Services like Police and Firefighting, Construction Sites, Self-defense, Auto Repair
1000+ Search and Rescue, Caving

A rechargeable flashlight may be just what you need if you are running through batteries quickly and need your flashlight to be reliably charged. If you are tired of filling the dump with used batteries and sometimes not having the batteries you need for your flashlight, why not give one of these rechargeable flashlights mentioned above a try. Just keep in mind that, depending on the light output you desire, you may need to charge the flashlight often.
